Biography

Dr. Sinclair began his professional career as a family practitioner in northern Ontario Canada. While working with the military, his assignment was in the high arctic as a Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) Doctor. During his postgraduate training in anesthesiology at University of Toronto and while serving as senior resident physician in a respiratory unit, he participated in high altitude research on Mount Logan in the Saint Elias range, Yukon, Canada. Dr. Sinclair’s interest in pain management steadily evolved during his residency training and he was subsequently an innovator in bringing pain management techniques and intensive respiratory therapies to patients in the small communities of northern Ontario. While continuing his anesthesiology career he was appointed as a Coroner for the province of Ontario, he established one of the first comprehensive integrated multi modal pain management clinics in Ontario, he was an expert witness for the Canadian Medical Protective Association and a resource for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in matters related to pain and pain management. In 1993, Dr. Sinclair became Medical Director of the Pain Evaluation and Treatment Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. After moving to Seattle, he became one of the clinic physicians for UBC, Inc. Dr. Sinclair combines this work with a part time private practice and consulting work in chronic pain management.

Education

Dr. Sinclair graduated from the University of Toronto medical school in 1962. From 1962-63, he served as a Rotating Intern for the Toronto East General Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Sinclair completed his Residency at the University of Toronto Medical School, Department of Anesthesiology in 1970, when he became Chief Resident for the following two years. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Pain Management through the Royal Victoria Hospital Comprehensive Multimodal Pain Management Centre at McGill University in 1989.

Professional Background

Dr. Sinclair has developed teaching videos, handbooks, textbook chapters, and various journal articles in the fields of anesthesiology, pain management and related conditions. Throughout his continuing 36 year career, his writing, as well as academic and public teaching have resulted in improved understanding of the complexities and details of pain and pain management by medical students, physicians, other health care professionals, patients and the general public.
